Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Part 71: Final Day, Trial: Déjà Vu

Part 71: Episode 3: Final Day, Trial: Déjà Vu

Apparently there have been a lot of lurkers just waiting for the one poll where they were absolutely sure of the answer.

Anyway, we just learned about a mysterious death at Studio Two five years ago. And the top of that fence looks suspiciously spear-like. Maybe the death last week happened the same way!

Look at this photo.

Music: Silence

Sound: Guilty

W-what is this?

O-order! Order!

Mr. Wright!
Sound: Whack

What is this all about!?

There was an unfortunate accident at Global Studios.

Not a word of this was leaked to the outside.

It was a close-kept secret at the studios.

Mr. Edgeworth...

You still can't see it?

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Sound: Stab

Are you saying...!?

Yes.

Mr. Wright! Continue!

It's 2:30 PM on the day of the murder!

Then she did it!

She pushed Mr. Hammer off the stairs onto the fence!

Sound: Stab 2

Bonus points for using a "stab" sound effect in the proper context. Can we take a break to go test that fence spike? Otherwise I'm not sure how we prove any of this.

Though whether she did it on purpose or by accident, I cannot say.

Oh look the mean-but-strained face is back.

He died in the same way that he caused another man to die...

Sound: Guilty

They're really hammering home this image. :rimshot:

Precisely.

Ironic, isn't it?

...

I could use a man like you on my script writing staff.

...

Mr. Wright.

And in the Evil Magistrate's costume, no less.

Are you then claiming that I carried the body to Studio One...

How could I have disposed of the body!?

...

Isn't this one obvious? She dumped it in the van and drove it over later I guess? The meeting ended at 4:00 PM, and the body was found at 5:00 PM - seems like plenty of time there. Or did it have to happen during the break, and we have to figure out how the path wasn't really blocked during that time?

Could Jack Hammer have been pushed off the stairs to his death...

then carried to Studio One and placed inside his costume?

Hmm... indeed.

No penalty here. It looks like we either have another "admit defeat" situation with the first option, or bring up our theory with the third option. Or just bluff with the second option I guess. Let's just get to the heart of the matter here.

other than with her own hands?
Sound: Realization

quote:

Before we go too far down that road, let's explore the paths not taken. Like last time, bluffing is not the answer here.

You'd be surprised! I bet she could do it!

When people think their life depends on it, they can do amazing things!

Mr. Wright, this is not an episode of "That's Incredible."

I don't usually comment much in these, but that reference goes back to the early '80s!

If you claim she did everything in 15 minutes...

(Let me guess: "Show Me Proof!")
Sound: Realization

Correct! Show me proof!

(How am I supposed to do that...?)
Sound: Realization

Then I won't have you making unsubstantiated claims!
Sound: Desk Slam

(...)

(Wait a second, how does he know what I'm thinking!?)

Hah!

I need only look at the cold sweat running down your face to know what you're thinking!

Mr. Wright. Perhaps you'd like to reconsider your claim?

Well, Mr. Wright? How could she have dealt with the body?

Sheesh, everyone is onto our antics now. We get to try again here, and could even pick the same answer again, but it just gets the same result.

quote:

Admitting that Ms. Vasquez couldn't handle moving the body directly just leads us into our theory anyway.

15 minutes is kind of a short amount of time...

You see?

Even I cannot do the impossible.

Therefore, Mr. Wright.

I didn't do it. Agreed?

Not agreed!

?

What if she had another way to carry the body,

other than with her own hands?
Sound: Realization

From here the scene plays out the same as the option we chose; we just get a bit of extra dialogue this way.

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

And there was a way for you to carry that body.

Sound: Stab

I-interesting! Let's hear it then.

Music: Telling the Truth

Mr. Wright?

This one's too easy to stop and poll the audience, and the update's too short anyway. Let's push on!

I spotted this one the moment the van was introduced as evidence.

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Ms. Vasquez.

You carried the body to Studio One.

Sound: Objection

quote:

Our badge - and anything else we have - each just produces a generic failure reacton.

Sound: Desk Slam

Dee Vasquez used this to carry the body to Studio One!

...

Mr. Wright...

Your Honor?

Mr. Wright, how can you carry a dead body with that?

Umm...
Sound: Whoops

Please rethink your statement.

Please show us how she carried the body.

We're sent back to try again until we get it right!

Music: Objection!

Sound: Stab

Vasquez is legitimately shocked by the least-stunning revelation yet.

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

I was fatigued, so I had Sal take me.

There was a van there, right? I had Sal drive me.

You used the van to carry the body to Studio One!

Sound: Objection

Where did the Magistrate costume come from? Was it just waiting there at Studio One, ready for the rehearsal that day I guess?

Sound: Stab 2

Hold on, Wright!

Sound: Desk Slam

Yup! Everyone we talked to yesterday said that Sal was a nobody who only got a shot at director thanks to the producer's favor, and as a result Sal was a terrified yes-man who would do anything she said. But...

It's more fun to pretend he wasn't!

Of course he wasn't!

Hah!

Then managed to put the body into the costume...?

Sound: Desk Slam

Are you seriously suggesting that is possible!?

...

Sound: Realization

Sound: Whoops

I was kidding. To, er, lighten up the proceedings.

Li...light...

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Super Shock

Mr. Wright.

Y-yes, Your Honor.

Fine, fine.

quote:

If we do claim Sal is a conspirator, we just skip the previous scene and move straight on to the next one.

Of course, Sal Manella has to have been a conspirator!

There's no way Ms. Vasquez could have done that alone!

Also, neither Sal Manella nor Dee Vasquez left a steak bone behind. So they clearly both skipped eating lunch during the break. What else could make Sal miss a meal?

They had to... because it was covered in Mr. Hammer's blood!

Sound: Desk Slam

Well, Ms. Vasquez!

Shall I continue!

...

Music: Silence

No need.

Hmph.

Sound: Realization

We...won? Already?

(I... win!?)

Everyone is stunned into silence.

So, case dismissed?
